Remember Wilberg
"Remember Wilberg" is a documentary produced by UTA's Department of Art and Art History about a December 1984 fire at the Wilberg Mine in Emery County, Utah.  The fire killed 27 coal miners.  The documentary took more than two years to produce.  While it honors the victims of the disaster, it will also be used as a safety training tool for coal miners.  A $1.3 million federal grant that was awarded to UTA's Division of Enterprise Development funded the project.
Virginia's Mine Rescue Technology
Virginia now has the best in communication with the purchase of an IWT system thanks to grant from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.  The system syncs to MSHA's.  In addition, the mine rescue team has added R-2 to their ranks for quicker response time.

2016 Nevada Regional Mine Rescue Competition
This is a video presentation of the various mine rescue teams participating in a mine rescue competition that was held in Winnemucca, Nevada.  The competition was held in March of 2016.  The competition was put on by the Nevada Mine Rescue Association and MSHA.

Virginia State Mine Rescue Team Formed
The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy announced the formation of a mine rescue team in 2016.  It is the first state team in the Commonwealth's history and will provide emergency response to all underground coal mines in Virginia. Services will also be offered to mineral mines.
Governor's Cup Mine Rescue Competition 2015
Eight mine rescue teams competed for the Virginia Governor's Cup on the campus of the University of Virginia's College at Wise in June 2015.  It is an important simulation of life-saving skills.
Ontario Mine Rescue
Ontario Mine Rescue, a part of Workplace Safety North, has trained and equipped thousands of volunteers who have fought fires, rescued injured personnel and responded to a wide array of incidents in the province's mines over the past eight decades.  Scenes from the Ontario Provincial Mine Rescue Competition 2010.
October 30th - Mine Rescue Day
October 30th is a fitting day to recognize mine rescuers.  On October 30, 1911, the first national mine rescue contest was held in the United States.  It was organized by Dr. Joseph A. Holmes, who in 1910 was appointed as the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines by President William Howard Taft.  The event was held at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, PA, and was attended by Director Holmes and President Taft.
December 6 - National Miners' Day
In 2009, Congress proclaimed that each December 6th would be recognized in remembrance of the 1907 Monongah coal mine disaster, which resulted in the deaths of 362 miners and became the worst industrial accident in American history.
Buried Alive - The Chilean Mine Rescue
The story of the miraculous rescue of 33 miners from the San Jose Copper Mine near Copiapo, Chile.  On October 13, 2010, after 69 days, all 33 of the miners were pulled from the mine in a rescue capsule designed and built by the Chilean Navy.  This rescue came following the longest period of entrapment on record.

2015 Goldcorp Mine Rescue Summit
Goldcorp's Mine Rescue Summit is held every two years.  In May 2015, the mine rescue teams from all our sites globally gathered in Mexico to train and learn best practices from each other.  Activities included putting the team comprised of our most senior executive management through an actual incident simulation.

Quecreek: Critical Decisions
On July 24, 2002 coal miners broke through into an abandoned, water-filled mine flooding the Quecreek Mine with over 150 million gallons of water.  Nine miners scrambled to safety, but nine were trapped in a pocket of air in the dark, cold, water filled mine.  They were rescued four days later through the combined efforts of state and federal mine rescue agencies and hundreds of workers and volunteers.

These "must see" videos were uncovered by USMRA member Brian Robinson from the UK.  According to Brian, these were aired on the BBC in the 1960s.  The individual on the rescue vehicle (02:32 of Part 1) is Brian's father.
Self-Contained Oxygen Breathing Apparatus 1926
This is clipped from the 1926 film by the U.S. Bureau of Mines titled, Oxygen Breathing Apparatus, made with the cooperation of the Peabody Coal Company.  The film shows the kinds of breathing apparatus used in mine rescues and explains their various parts.
Mathilde Iron Mine in Germany
Broistedt, Germany - In 1963, eleven men were rescued from the flooded Mathilde iron mine, two weeks after they were entombed and given up for dead.
Monopol-Grimberg Coal Mine in Germany
In February 1946, 550 miners were trapped in the Monopol-Grimberg Coal Mine explosion in Unna, near Dortmund, Germany.  70 miners were brought to the surface after an undisclosed period, of which 11 were dead.
Two Year Old Freed
In January 1957, a two year old boy named Graham is rescued from a bore hole in Mandurah, Australia after being trapped for 24 hours thanks to the effort of miners.
French Limestone Mine Rescue
In 1964, nine miners were brought to the surface in a rescue capsule after their 8-day entrapment in a limestone mine near Champagnole, France.
Sheppton Mine Rescue
In the early hours of Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1963, first David Throne, then Henry Fellin were pulled from a depth of 330 feet to the surface wearing parachute harnesses and football helmets.  A third miner in the mine at the time, Lou Bova, was never recovered.
Abandoned Mine Rescue
On July 12, 1963, in a miracle survival that confounded experts, three teenage boys, Danny O'Kain, Billy Burke and Bobby Abbott, were found alive after spending 2 days in an abandoned, gas-ridden mine near Pittsburgh, PA.  The youngsters were found nearly a half-mile from the mouth of No. 2 shaft of Castle Shannon Coal Company which had not been used for more than 25 years.  Their rescuers were U. S. Bureau of Mines Inspectors Everett Turner, James Hutchens and Jennings Breedon.
Scotland Mine Rescue
Out of the jaws of death: In October 1923, 5 of the entombed miners in a Falkirk, Scotland mine disaster were rescued after being 9 days underground.
