Metal and Nonmetal Rescue Training Contest Announcement

MSHA strongly believes in the important function served by events such as mine rescue contests and other events that allow the mining community to train and maintain mine rescue teams and share best practices.  We appreciate the long-standing commitment of miners and operators to mine rescue and ensuring that teams are ready and able to respond in the event of a mine emergency.  The metal and nonmetal mining industry could not have this capability without everyone's continuing commitment to mine rescue.

Conferences such as the National Metal and Nonmetal Mine Rescue Training Contest (Rescue Training Contest) must follow applicable procedures and requirements.  In light of government-wide efforts to re-assess the sponsorship and funding of conferences and to ensure all applicable requirements are satisfied, MSHA has initiated a review of the existing structure and procedures for planning and conducting the Rescue Training Contest.  In order to conduct this review process, MSHA must postpone the Training Contest currently scheduled for July 30 - August 2, 2012.

During the review process, the Agency will explore options for revising the structure of the Training Contest.  MSHA intends to reschedule when the review process is complete.

We regret any inconvenience to those who were planning to attend the Rescue Training Contest, in particular the mine rescue teams, which we know have been working hard to prepare for this event.  Checks for team entry fees sent to MSHA will be returned.  We look forward to moving ahead with the contest as soon as is feasible.
