Mine rescue teams in Harlan County were among over 70 mine rescue teams throughout the nation that competed in last week’s Kentucky State Mine Rescue Competition in Lexington.  The three-day competition was held in downtown Lexington at Heritage Hall on Aug. 21-23 and was organized by the Kentucky Mining Institute.

The Kentucky Coal Academy’s (KCA) mine rescue team, based out of Madisonville, was one of the teams competing, and team member David Mackey placed second on the state as well as the federal level in the Pre-Shift Contest.

Whisman, along with Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College KCA Director Murrel Dixon and KCA Public Relations Specialist Jennifer McDaniels, attended the state mine rescue contest and worked an info booth during the three days of competitions.  Literature pertaining to the training services of the Kentucky Coal Academy along with plenty of free items were given to hundreds of coal miners.

The Kentucky Coal Academy is a mine training and safety advocacy program funded by the state that operates under the direction of the Kentucky Community & Technical College System.  The KCA has programs offered at Southeast as well as Madisonville Community College, Big Sandy Community & Technical College, and Hazard Community & Technical College.
