The Kentucky Coal Academy and Madisonville Community College recently joined forces to host the annual spring regional mine rescue skills contest.

Nine teams from five coal companies in Kentucky and Indiana took to the competition field April 7 to test their skills in mine rescue, fire hose management, smoke training, first aid and preliminaries (written test, breathing apparatus and gas testing), according to a release.

Participating teams were Alliance Resource Partners' Dotiki, Excel, Gibson County, River View and Warrior; Peabody Energy's Francisco; Sunrise Coal's Sunrise; Alden Resources' Alden; and Indiana State Team's Indiana State.

Sunrise Coal from Vincennes, Indiana earned first place.  Excel Mining from eastern Kentucky took second place.  River View Coal took third place.

The top three teams are now eligible to compete in the 2016 Nationwide Mine Rescue Skills Championship, which will be held Oct. 5-6 at the KCA/MCC Mine Emergency Rescue Academy in Madisonville.

The academy is located on the MCC campus at 150 School Avenue in Madisonville, and specializes in designing contests to challenge the mine rescue team mentally and physically, the release said.
